As a pet parent and pet lover, I donate to other pets in need as much as possible. Of course, I would love to be able to do more, and now, thanks to PetSmart®, we can all do more to help more pets!

What is Buy A Bag, Give A Meal™?

To celebrate their 30th anniversary, PetSmart has announced the launch of its biggest philanthropic effort to date, the Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ program. Through the end of this year, for every bag of dog or cat food purchased online and at all its stores across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, PetSmart will donate a meal to a pet in need served by pet shelters, animal welfare organizations and food banks. PetSmart expects to contribute more than 60 million meals to pets in need.

The Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ program includes all brands and sizes of dog and cat food bags purchased in all PetSmart stores, as well as online at PetSmart.com and PetSmart.ca. PetSmart Charities® plans to work with national nonprofits to help distribute the pet food directly to pets in need.

Here’s a video that explains the benefits of Buy A Bag, Give A Meal™ in pet terms:

Why Buy A Bag, Give A Meal™?

Close to 7 million pets enter shelters every year across North America. According to a recent survey of nearly 1,800 animal welfare groups, only 20 percent receive pet food donations and 8 percent are on contract with pet food brands to receive subsidized pet food.

When we think of pets in need, we usually think of those in shelters. There are many pets in need living with families struggling to make ends meet. The families may receive assistance from food banks and pantries. Unfortunately, though, pet food is not eligible for purchase in most food assistance programs. Left with few options, many needy families resort to feeding their pets human food so they’ll have something to eat. This isn’t good for the pets or their people.

David Haworth, DVM, Ph.D., president of PetSmart Charities, stated: “These food donations are key to helping animal welfare organizations continue their life-saving work, as well as deliver pet food as an option at food banks and pantries. We look forward to seeing the impact this significant donation will make to close the gap on this critical and essential need in animal welfare.”

PetSmart, with its nonprofit partner, PetSmart Charities, has been a leader in adoption, saving more than 7.3 million pets’ lives. PetSmart Charities is the leading funder of animal welfare across North America, has donated about $300 million to date to help pets in need.

Many thanks to PetSmart for making it so easy for us and our pets to help those in need! To learn more about the Buy A Bag, Give A Meal™ program, read the complete press release.

  1. I love this! I’ve always appreciated the things PetSmart does to help animals in need and to promote adoption. 4 of our 6 cats were adopted at PetSmart, through a local rescue that holds their adoption events there. PetSmart hosts them every weekend for adoptions, which is awesome! They also frequently have cans of cat or dog food at the checkout counters, and as you’re checking out, you can purchase a can (or 2 or 3!) for a local rescue to be donated. Now they are doing even more, which is awesome! Thanks for sharing about this.
