Siamese Cats: Chatty, Lovable and Full of Personality

If you like a feline with a big personality, check out Siamese cats. This breed loves people and will follow their humans around the house.  Siamese cats are very affectionate and like to be held.   If you see a picture of a cat on his human’s back, there’s a good possibility the cat is a Siamese.

History of Siamese Cats

Siamese cats originated centuries ago in Siam (now Thailand).  The King of Siam was a cat lover and commissioned the creation of a book of cat verses called Smud Khoi of Cats.  This book was a copy of a 14th century work that discussed the Siamese cat and another breed, the Korat. The Korat is the good luck cat of Thailand.

Siamese cats arrived in Britain in the early 1870’s but didn’t arrive in the United States until 1878.  A pair of Siamese were given as a gift to David Stickles, the American consul at the time.  Stickles then gave the cats to the wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes.

A legend exists that Siamese have a kinked tail because ladies would store their rings on the cat’s tail, and the tail angled to keep the rings from falling off.

Characteristics

Siamese cats are known for their chattiness and very deep voice.  They are great with children, may tolerate being dressed up and love being a lap cat.  Siamese form strong attachments to their “chosen” humans and don’t like to be left alone for long periods of time.

They have a long, lean body and short hair that comes in a variety of color point patterns.  Siamese are athletic and energetic. It’s important to make sure they have lots of room to play and stimulate their minds.

Health Concerns

Health issues for Siamese cats include crossed eyes (this can be caused by an inherited neurological defect) and congenital heart defects.  Wool sucking and wood chewing are known behavioral problems with Siamese.

If you have time to spend with them and are willing to give them the attention and love they crave, a Siamese can be a great addition to your family!
