Some people choose a cat as a pet simply because they believe there is very little care and attention that they will need. Cats are often thought to be 
completely independent, capable of taking care of their own needs. While this may be true to an extent, cats are often as social as dogs and require care and attention.
Things To Consider Before Getting A Cat
- Financial responsibilities – Cats may be easier to take care of than dogs, but there are still expenses to consider. You will need to make sure you have the funds to take care of the following:
- Food
- An assortment of cat toys
- Bedding
- Spaying or neutering (this is usually included if you adopt from a rescue or shelter)
- Bowls for feeding
- Litter and tray
- Travel carrier
- Tools for grooming
- Hairball medications
- Lap time – A majority of cats do not like to constantly be rubbed or petted like most dogs do. However, they do still enjoy being able to curl up on the lap of their owner from time to time. Cats can also be quite playful on occasion, which is a great time to spend some one on one playtime with the pet you add to your family.
- What breed appeals to you – Some people that choose a cat as a pet may only want to choose a pedigree, then there are others that are just as happy with mixed breeds. Since there are more than 50 different cat breeds, you may want to do a little research before deciding on the breed that fits the needs of your family. The color, temperament, and hair length are also some other factors you will want to think about as well.
- Vaccinations – This is a very important and essential part of owning just about any type of pet. In order to ensure the overall health of your cat is good you will certainly want to make regular trips to the vet for immunizations and check-ups. Insect pests like fleas can also become a huge problem very quickly if your cat likes to roam around outside. It is important to take the necessary precautions to avoid preventable health problems and infestations.
