Being Cat Lady Could Cure What Ails You

The term cat lady is frequently tossed around in jest, giving rise to the idea of a single woman with numerous cats and perhaps a less than active social life. She may struggle developing relationships with other people or just prefer a life of solitude.

Some hint these women are substituting cats for personal relationships with others. Whatever the case may be, being the crazy cat lady just might be the cure for what ails you.

According to petmd.com, studies have shown women cat owners benefit the most from having a pet cat (or two, or three, or more!) These ladies might be on to something.

Benefits of Being A Cat Lady

Women over the age of 50 benefit greatly from owning pets. Cats have proven to be more beneficial in this regard than dogs. Cats  improve the lives of their caretakers. They also improve the physical and mental health of their owners.

So, why do single women over 50 benefit from cat ownership? Well, they are typically routine-oriented and home-based people who appreciate and embrace their quiet, down time. This is a perfect scenario for a cat.

Keeping Active

As women age, their metabolism slows down and they usually become less active, according to the National Institutes of Health. Having a cat can greatly change this process, as you have to get up to feed, care for, shop for and clean up after a cat, giving one a bit of a cardio workout throughout the day.

Unconditional Love

Sometimes, a woman just has to have someone in whom to confide. Who better than a cat? They listen well; their demands are relatively simple; and they won’t complain about your cooking skills. Also, when compared to other human companions, the messes they make are minimal in comparison. There is that added bonus of unconditional love and affection, regardless of your mood or appearance!

Lessen Chances of Cardiovascular Disease

Research shows cats improve overall health, especially in women. Evidence has revealed a decreased risk in dying from cardiovascular disease or a stroke when a woman over the age of 50 owns a cat. Just the simple act of petting a cat releases a healthy dose of prolactin, oxytocin and dopamine, all of which are feel-good hormones that lower stress levels.

Help Battle Depression

So, when you come home stressed out at the end of the day, take a few minutes to sit down and pet your cat. Studies have even shown that cats can even improve depression and anxiety issues by giving owners a sense of purpose and responsibility. And who among us hasn’t laughed at those crazy antics of cats? Laughter is the best medicine!

Therefore, if one cat can provide so many amazing health benefits, it would stand to reason that having multiple cats just might put you at optimum health, right? Doesn’t seem so crazy after all, does it?
