Although I labeled Love Saves The Day as a “cat book”, it’s actually a whole lot more. Prudence, a very intelligent and insightful tabby, is the central character, but writer Gwen Cooper tells the story from both a human and feline point of view.
Prudence is found as a kitten by Sarah, and they form a very tight bond. One day, Prudence notices that Sarah, her Most Important Person, never came home. Instead, Sarah’s daughter Laura comes to take Prudence to live with her.
Through the course of the book, each chapter is told from the point of view of Prudence, Sarah or Laura. As the story unfolds, the details of the strained relationship Sarah had with her daughter Laura are revealed. Through Cooper’s masterful writing, you come to understand and care for each of the central characters.
The star of the book is Prudence the cat. Her observations about humans and life in general are sometimes sad, sometimes funny and always quite interesting. In fact, you may look at your cat differently after reading this book, wondering if they’re having some of the same thoughts as Prudence.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s about relationships, love, loss and healing. This book is easy to relate to, because we’ve all been through much of what Sarah, Laura and even Prudence experience. At times I laughed out loud at Prudence (she wondered why humans only had one child at a time, rather than the more efficient way cats do it by having a litter), and other times I cried (Prudence realizing Sarah, her Most Important Person, won’t be coming back).
Although things don’t always run smoothly for those in the book, in the end, love really does save the day.
The book will be coming out in paperback on October 22. For every copy of the paperback that is pre-ordered or bought in-store or online between now and Sunday, October 27, Gwen will donate 100% of her royalties to Blind Cat Rescue through the Homer’s Heroes Fund, in honor of her cat Homer that passed away recently.
