Crazy Cat Lady or Crazy in Love with Cats???

If you have ever been on a dating web site, chances are you have come across some people – both male and female – who confess to owning more than one cat, and many of them do so with no shame reflex.  But that’s okay.  Pet lovers are usually pretty crazy about their pets. Otherwise, why have them? Interestingly, though, you rarely, if ever, hear the phrase “crazy dog lady.”  So why does the “crazy cat lady” label tend to make the rounds? Personally, I think it’s a ridiculous stereotype and here are a few reasons why I feel that way.

Most folks assume only single women have cats. I beg to differ. Like I mentioned, several of the men posting on those online dating sites openly admit to having cats.  Felines are not just for females, people!  But we never hear someone refer to such a guy as a “crazy cat man.” Just because women who have cats are often (and erroneously!) deemed single for life, it doesn’t mean they are destined for that role. They are just independent enough to not need a man at the moment!

Many people think women who have cats rarely socialize. That’s a big myth. I know of several people who have more than one cat who are the life of the party wherever they go. Just because a woman has a few cats doesn’t mean she is isolating herself at home 24/7.

And before anyone thinks a cat lady is a hoarder in disguise, that thought must be banished.  Consider this. Many people who own multiple cats do so for either breeding or rescue purposes. Isn’t it awesome that someone has such a big heart as to save the lives of animals in need that could otherwise remain homeless or worse…killed??? They aren’t crazy cat ladies. They are angels on earth!

And, again, I know many people who have several pets that are NOT cats, yet there are no “crazy” labels associated with them. It just doesn’t make sense to shame someone for having multiple cats, as I think that it takes a warm-hearted, kind and compassionate person to take care of our feline friends. So, if you see yourself as one of those “crazy cat ladies,” stand tall and walk proud. You are a fierce and independent gal who simply knows what she loves!
