Cat Breeds: Russian Blue

Russian Blue CatThe Russian Blue is a beautiful cat breed that’s well-mannered with a quiet voice and demeanor to match. Russian Blues originated in northern Russia and came to the U.S. via breeder imports from Scandinavia and England.

This cat breed has a long, fine-boned body, round green eyes and a blunt muzzle.  They are known for their shiny silver tipped gray coat.  Their coat is so dense that it stands out from their body.  It is said this breed was in danger many years ago because their coats were prized by Russian trappers during the long, cold Russian winters.

Because of their dense coat, it is important to brush them at least twice a week to remove loose hair.

Russian Blues are shy but affectionate and are quite active.  They’re a bit flighty, making them not a great breed for households with children.  Many of them like to play catch and some have been known to open doors.  This breed also loves to drink water out of the faucet.

They are a quite healthy breed, but do have a tendency toward bladder stones.

If you like a shy, quiet cat that’s smart and athletic, definitely check out the Russian Blue!
