Choosing Cat Collars

Many cat guardians don’t put much time into selecting cat collars and they settle for any type of collar they can find. This is certainly not a very wise cat collarsdecision and it can actually lead to serious injuries or even the death of your beloved family pet.

Cat Collars Are Not the Same As Dog Collars

Dog collars are made with a clasp that is intended to be attached to a leash. The main purpose of using a dog leash is to keep pets from being able to get away from their owner. For this reason their collars are designed in such a way that keeps them securely fit around the neck of the animal. The same however is not true for a cat collar.

A majority of cats do not walk on a leash, and they are well known for being able to climb into some of the most unusual places. This is precisely why cat collars are made differently than dog collars. While the materials used in their making may vary, cat collars are designed in such a way that they will come off when cats find themselves in dangerous situations. This is extremely important because without this feature a cat could suffer serious injury or death with some of the precarious situations they often get into.

Cat Collars Offer Variety of Designs, Styles, and Materials

Regardless of the style, design, or material used in making cat collars, it is made to come off when needed. A few of the most common styles available today with safety in mind, the materials they are made with, and the way they come off are as follows:

  • Breakaway cat collars – This particular type of collar is constructed with a clasp that is specially designed to release when a certain amount of pressure is applied to the mechanism. If your cat happens to get into a position where his collar gets caught, it will release as he begins to struggle to fight to get free. This is one of the safest types of collars made available today.
  • Buckle cat collars – This collar has a panel made with a rubber band type material that is stretchy and sewn directly into the collar or it’s made of flexible elastic. This type of collar is designed to expand when cats get in dangerous situations and it easily slips right off their head as they struggle to get free. It is important to get the appropriate length of a collar when selecting this and other types of cat collars.
  • Velcro and plastic clasp cat collars – These have become popular types of feline collars mainly because they are easy to use and they are also inexpensive. The design used in their making is to easily slip off your cat’s head to avoid injury when he becomes stuck in a spot he cannot get out of.
