Happy Earth Day!  Today many of us are even more focused than usual on ways to help preserve our planet.  One way we can help is buying earth-friendly pet products.

In Pets Gone Green: Live a More Eco-Concious Life with Your Pets, author Eve Adamson recommends asking these questions when choosing products for our pets:

When no longer usable, can the product be recycled?  What about the product packaging, is it recyclable?

The Scratch Lounge Classic scratcher has reversible panels so it lasts longer.  It’s made from recycled cardboard and can be recycled when totally used.

What materials comprise the product? Is the product and packaging made from recycled materials?

The Ripple Rug provides a bed and play area to pounce or sleep on the ripples or inside the tunnels. It can be moved and reconfigured to add to the fun. The Ripple Rug has a rubber backing to keep it in place while your cat is playing. It is constructed in the US from 100% recycled plastic bottles.

Is it produced sustainably?  Are the materials the product is made from renewable, such as bamboo, hemp, cork or organic cotton?

More natural cat litter brands are entering the market. One example is Okokat, made from sustainable wood fiber.

If the product goes into your pet’s mouth (toys, food or treats) are you sure it’s organic or comes from all-natural ingredients?

All products produced by DharmaDogKarmaCat use non-toxic dyes and a sustainable drying process to reduce environmental impacts.

Is it local or regional?  Did the product travel less than halfway across the country to get to you?

The Box Bed from AuntieEmCreations on Etsy uses recycled material to pad the bed. These beds are reversible to extend the usability and time between washings.  Materials used for the bed cover are sturdy so they’re longer lasting.

Is it cruelty free, with no animal testing?

Does the company contribute to charities or participate in other activities to give back to the earth or animal causes?

The Eco-Pouncer from Honest Pet Products is a toy all-natural materials.A  portion of sales helps impoverished families in Mongolia, and helps preserve the snow leopard population.

Products are made in the US, with no toxic materials or dyes. The company also hosts a Toxic Toy Buy Back 4 times a year. By sending any pet toy you discover contains toxic materials, you can send to the company, receive store credit, and they will dispose of the toy for you!

Yes, a lot of questions, but asking even a portion of them will help you make more informed, earth-friendly product choices for you and your pet.
