Series To Binge Watch This Winter: 5 Of Our Favorites To Check Out

Here in the Kansas City area, we’ve had a string of grey, cold rainy days.  When the weather is crummy, it’s fun to cuddle with your pet crew and find some great programming to binge watch.  With that in mind, here are five of our favorite series to binge watch:

Series To Binge Watch If You’re in the Mood for Espionage:

The Americans (Amazon)

This FX series seems very timely with all the talk of our relationship with Russia.

The show is set in the 1980’s, centering around a suburban married couple and their two children.  As it turns out, they aren’t at all what they appear to be….they’re Russian agents based in the US.

There’s quite a bit of violence, the spies don’t hesitate to shoot to avoid detection.  This show is intriguing, and will make you think.

Amazon has five seasons available to stream free for Prime members.

If You’re A Thelma & Louise Fan:

Wanted (Netflix)

I stumbled on this one a couple of weeks ago, and loved it!  Thelma and Louise is one of my favorite movies of all time, and this Australian series is very reminiscent of that movie.

In the series, two women stumble on a crime in progress at a bus stop they both frequent.  They accidentally murder one of the criminals and head out on the run.

There’s never a dull moment as the women work to evade the very bad guys and the police.  If you like a good chase with a lot of excitement, I highly suggest checking this out.  There are two seasons available to stream on Netflix.

For Foodies That Love a Good Baking Show:

The Great British Baking Show (Netflix)

This PBS show is a option if you’re a fan of reality-based foodie programming.  It takes place in the British countryside and is very charming and entertaining.

The hosts of the show inject humor to help the bakers relax during the various competitions.  There’s much more interaction with contestants so you get to know them on a personal level.

Some terms are different, for example, “cake” is referred to “sponge” and ingredients/flavor profiles are different than what we’re used to, but that’s one of the things I really liked about it.

There are four seasons of this show available to stream on Netflix.  I highly recommend it for the foodies out there!

If You Like A Scary Murder Story:

The Fall (Netflix)

This is a thriller you don’t want to watch alone in the dark.  Gillian Anderson plays a detective on the hunt for a serial killer (played by Jamie Dornan).

Anderson plays a very cold, unemotional detective with flaws and a back story. Through the course of the investigation, she gets into the mind of the murderer.

Dornan (from the Fifty Shades movies) plays a very different type of character here.  Married, with children, he definitely lives a double life.

If you’re a lover of psychological thrillers, this is definitely a series to check out!  There are three seasons of this show to stream on Netflix.

Series To Binge Watch If You’re Looking For A Good Laugh

Master of None (Netflix)

If you’re a fan of Aziz Ansari, you’ll like this series.  The show centers around Ansari and his friends as they navigate the single life in New York City.

He plays an actor named Dev that is struggling to determine what path he wants to follow, and who he wants to have as his partner along the way.

Dev is pressured by his parents to stick with tradition and an arrange marriage, but he is determined to become involved with women of his own choosing.

Loosely based on Ansari’s personal experiences, it’s easy to relate to many of the issues he deals with trying to figure out his path in life.  I highly recommend this, you’ll laugh, and once in a while you might get really sad. Check it out!

Conclusion

If you’re looking at cutting the cable cord and going with streaming services, don’t have a smart TV, or have one that has a clunky interface, I highly recommend the Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote for streaming. I have Fire TV for one television and Apple TV on another.

For me, the Fire TV was much easier to set up and use.  I definitely prefer it to the Apple TV I have!

There are many series to binge watch, what ones have you checked out? Leave us a comment with your program recommendations, we’d love to hear from you!
