Warning: 5 Things NOT To Say To Cat Owners

cat owners

I am not a cat owner. However, I know many cat owners. Those I know are quite persnickety when it comes to how they feel about their cats and comments others without cats might make about them or to them. Perhaps some of the following common sentiments shared by non-cat owners, as researched on vetstreet.com, will either resonate with you or flat out make your blood boil.

I Like Dogs Better, They’re Friendlier

Many dog owners assume that cats are not active or even personable, but savvy cat owners know that is far from the case.  So what do you do when someone says, “I like dogs better. They are so much friendlier?”  So your dog jumps to greet you when you walk in the door every day.  So what? Your intelligent feline fully assesses the situation and will slowly transition into cozying up to you. Your cat is probably just waiting for the perfect moment and the perfect lap.  Dogs are too impatient for that, am I right?

It’s Easy To Tell You Have Cats

Then there are those folks who immediately say, “I can tell you have cats.” So what?  Don’t you wear your cat fur with pride? It’s one thing to notice it on a person’s clothing. Uttering a comment like this while walking into a cat owner’s house will most likely constitute an immediate invitation to turn around and walk right back out the door!

I See A Crazy Cat Lady In The Making

There are those individuals who just can’t resist: “I see a crazy cat lady in the making here!”  This was never intended to be a compliment, folks. I think it’s safe to say that people can be crazy about cats (in a good way!) but definitely not crazy.  Unless you have a degree in psychology, it’s best not to say anything in this regard. (How come we never hear the expression “Crazy dog lady?”  There are many people who have several dogs!)

Does He Do Anything Besides Lie Around All Day?

Some folks assume that cats are just lazy.  “Does he do anything besides lie around all day?” they might inquire.  Trust me; my dog is well on his way to setting a record for lounging the day away, so this behavior is not just limited to the feline kind. Cats do not just eat, sleep and poop. Cats have assorted interests and personalities. You just have to be observant. (Of course, we all know that much of their zooming throughout the house can occur in the middle of the night while you are sleeping!)

How Can You Stand Letting Your Cats On The Counters?

“Oh, gross!  How can you stand letting your cats up on the counters?”  Well, good luck trying to keep them off the counters. Like headstrong teenagers, it’s not always possible to get these creatures to do exactly what you want, right?

It’s easy to judge what it might be like to have a cat, but if you have never owned one, you will truly never know. And for that, many cat owners just might feel sorry for you.  “Oh, what you are missing out on,” they might knowingly smile!
